Winter Rest: Leaning Into Stillness
Winter has a funny way of asking us to slow down. The days get shorter, the temperatures drop, and suddenly leaving the house feels like a full-time commitment. The blankets get heavier, the tea gets hotter, and your bed starts looking like the most attractive place on the planet. Honestly? I get it. 😂
But beyond the cozy sweaters and questionable decisions to run errands in freezing temperatures, winter gives us an opportunity to rethink how we approach rest. We're so accustomed to constantly doing something that slowing down can feel uncomfortable. There's always another task, another goal, another email, another reason to convince ourselves we haven't done enough. But what if winter isn't asking you to do more? What if it's asking you to be more intentional about where your energy goes?
Rest Is Productive, Actually.
Somewhere along the way, we started treating rest like a reward. Something we earn after finishing the to-do list or working ourselves into the ground. The problem? The to-do list is never-ending.
Rest isn't laziness, and it shouldn't be reserved for when you're completely exhausted. Your body needs recovery just as much as it needs movement. Your mind needs quiet just as much as it needs stimulation. That might mean swapping an intense workout for gentle yoga, incorporating functional training that supports your everyday movement, or giving your muscles some extra attention through recovery practices like dry cupping.
The goal isn't to stop moving. It's to recognize when your body needs a different kind of attention.
Find Your Winter Ritual.
Stillness doesn't have to mean sitting perfectly still for 30 minutes with your eyes closed. Pleaseeee, some of us have things to do and brains that refuse to cooperate. 😂 Sometimes stillness is making a cup of tea and actually sitting down to drink it. It's stretching on the floor, journaling without overthinking, taking a slower walk, or having an evening without plans.
It can also mean checking in with yourself.
Are you overwhelmed?
Are you making time for the people you love?
Are you giving yourself the same care and consideration you give everyone else?
Keep your rituals simple. Maybe it's a morning stretch, a little yoga, a recovery session, or a warm cup of Zena Chai. Whatever it looks like, give yourself permission to enjoy the moment instead of rushing through it.
You Don't Have to Bloom All Year.
Nature doesn't bloom all year. Trees shed their leaves, some plants go dormant, and the seasons change. There's something worth learning from that.
You can still work toward your goals, build strength, show up for your people, and create meaningful things while allowing yourself to slow down. There's a difference between giving up and giving yourself room to breathe.
So this winter, take the pressure off a little. Move because it feels good. Rest before you're completely depleted. Make the tea. Book the recovery session. Stretch a little longer. Say no when you need to.
You don't have to be in full bloom every single day. Sometimes the garden needs a little stillness, too.
Tend to the delicacies of your garden. 🌿
